Project quality management
Challenges
Verax Systems delivers mission-critical systems for the telecommunications, banking and enterprise markets. According to Gartner, 75% of all information technology (IT) projects exceed budget and schedule and 33% of them fail. The annual cost of IT failure in Western Europe amounts to $140 billion. Building management tools to deliver projects on-time, on-functionality and on-quality is a moving target.
Verax Systems has based its project quality management methodology on the widely used standards including: PMBoK, Rational Unified Process and Prince2 combined with other methods commonly used specifically in the IT project management domain.
The methodology is independent of the type of project such as a fixed price, time and materials, outsourcing, support engagement or others, covering the entire project lifecycle from requirements gathering to transition and support.
Balanced approach
In order to address the challenges listed above, Verax Systems has worked out a formal project management methodology. It balances the management and technical aspects of IT projects - we strongly believe that both need to be addressed properly in order to achieve success.
Project controlling
Verax Systems implemented a project controlling system taking advantage of the Project Balance Scorecard. The approach applied allowed us not only to go beyond evaluating the project outcome by its profitability for Verax Systems, but also to measure key success factors for the Customer.
Methodology components
The following items consitute Verax Systems' project management:
- Requirements management - obliges a Project Manager to identify the business objectives within the client organization to be achieved by the project.
- Time and cost management - every task in the project has an assigned estimated effort and deadline. Throughout the project execution time is registered on each task, rather than entire project, therefore any delays can be quickly reported.
- Quality management - all deliverables (from requirements specification to tests and code) must undergo an internal review, in order to ensure quality.
- Risk management - each project has an associated risk log that is constantly reviewed.
- Issue management - similarly to risks, project issues are also tracked in the project log.
- Change management - a formal change request procedure is defined for each project to ensure that changes are properly communicated, tracked and approved.
- Communications management - communication in our projects is logged in order to allow for history tracking of project status reports, meeting minutes and others.
Project portfolio management software
All methodology components are supported by the Verax Project Portfolio Manager software tool, enabling project control and daily supervision on the company level. Having a single, structured project repository facilitates learning from similar cases in the past. Automatic report generation and integrated time and cost control allows project managers to view project statuses in an online manner and thus manage them better.
Project management document library
Verax Project Portfolio Manager provides a document library which provides document templates for all PM documents such as project status report, or project plan. The document library ensures consistent performance across multiple projects, executed in different parts of the organization.
